Three new PhDs awarded to young researchers trained within GLYCOPHARM

After Alessandra Lacetera obtained her PhD in June (see new dated on June 16), three more PhDs have been awarded to young researchers trained within the GLYCOPHARM network: Giulia Cazzanelli, Cecilia Romanò, and Andrea Flores Ibarra.

Giulia Cazzanelli was recruited under the supervision of Cândida Lucas and Ana A. Preto at the University of Minho (UMINHO). On September 19 she defended her PhD Thesis entitled “Study the roles of human galectin-3 using the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae and colorectal cancer cells as eukaryotic models”.

The public defence was held at the University of Minho (Braga), with Cândida Lucas and Dolores Solís (scientist in charge of CSICa and coordinator of GLYCOPHARM) participating as members of the jury.

Cecilia Romanò, ESR recruited at University College Dublin (UCD, National University of Ireland) under the supervision of Stefan Oscarson, passed her “closed door” Viva Voce examination on October 13. The Thesis title was "Synthesis of fluoro- and seleno-labelled carbohydrate structures as tools for elucidation of glycan-lectin interactions". The jury was composed by Carlo Unverzagt (University of Bayreuth), Marina Rubini (UCD), and Eoghan McGarrigle (UCD) as committee chair.

Most recently, Andrea Flores Ibarra, who was recruited at the National Research Council under the supervision of Antonio Romero (CSICc), was also awarded a PhD. Her Thesis was entitled “Structural characterization of galectin-3 and galectin-related protein by X-ray crystallography”.

The public defence was held on October 18 at the Faculty of Sciences of the Autónoma University of Madrid. The members of GLYCOPHARM Jesús Jiménez-Barbero (scientist in charge of CIC bioGUNE), Sonsoles Martín-Santamaría (scientist in charge of CSICd), and Dolores Solís participated in the jury.
